Homburg Schlossberg Sand Caves  August 10, 2008

Today we visited the Schlossberg Sand Caves in Homburg, Germany. These are Europe's most extensive new red sandstone cave system. We climbed all the way to the top of the hill only to take the 146 stairs back down to the caves. The Schlossberg caves have a total length of 11 Kilometers on 12 levels, they were entirely dug out by hand. The first excavations were in the 11th Century, and the caves housed mass air-raid shelters during the Second World War. There is even a Cold War nuclear shelter there which was never used in anger.

On our drive to the caves, we passed by and under the Karlsberg Beer Brewery. John was in heaven!

We even discovered the famous Schlossberg Hotel. While reading the menu outside we discovered that a simple steak dinner is 65 euro dollars..that converts to about a $80 steak plate. Too rich for my blood!

It was a little piece of interesting history, but I think our favorite part was having to wear the hard hats. Didn't we look so cute? Afterwards, the boys enjoyed a cold ice cream on a warm summer Germany day!
